Terry Pratchett makes plans for assisted suicide

“It is often said that before you die your life passes before your eyes. It is in fact true. It’s called living.” – Terry Pratchett

Terry Pratchett has received, but not yet filled in forms from Dignitas to allow him to end his own life when the time comes.

I’m not going to think about this. I don’t think I can.

How to Prevent Sexual Assault

An important read for anyone concerned with preventing sexual assaults.

The original is unfortunately in image format, so I’ll repost it here as text. American spellings retained.

  1. Don’t put drugs in people’s drinks in order to control their behavior.
  2. When you see someone walking by themselves, leave them alone.
  3. If you pull over to help someone with car problems, remember not to assault them!
  4. NEVER open an unlocked door or window uninvited.
  5. If you are in an elevator and someone else gets in, DON’T ASSAULT THEM!
  6. USE THE BUDDY SYSTEM! If you are not able to stop yourself from assaulting people, ask a friend to stay with you while you are in public.
  7. Always be honest with people! Don’t pretend to be a caring friend in order to gain the trust of someone you want to assault. Consider telling them you plan to assault them. If you don’t communicate your intentions, the other person may take that as a sign that you do not plan to rape them.
  8. Don’t forget: you can’t have sex with someone unless they are awake!
  9. Carry a whistle! If you’re worried you might assault someone “accidentally” you can hand it to the person you’re with so they can blow it if you do.
  10. Don’t assault people.

Damon Fowler stands up for freedom

Damon Fowler, a student in Bastrop High School, Louisiana, knew that prayers would be included as part of the graduation ceremony. He also knew that this was illegal. So he sent an e-mail to the school board, reminding them to follow the law.

For this, he has been vilified in the local press by a teacher at the school (Mitzi Quinn), punished by his parents, and ostracised from the community. Such is Christian love. Luckily, his older siblings seem sensible.

Hemant Mehta has all the details over on Friendly Atheist.

JT Eberhard’s post includes a letter he sent to the school.

PZ Myers was as caustic as ever: “Religion unites people.”

You can get the details in his own words from his post on Reddit and the later update from his brother.

Alternatively, you could read the horribly biased article in the local newspaper (and an even worse follow up). Ugh.
